Alarming Study Highlights Lack of Awareness Among UK’s Youth Regarding Available Careers Advice

Youth Group, the leading organization dedicated to youth employment in the country, boasting over 1.7 million members, has released new data shedding light on the concerning lack of access to support and guidance faced by young individuals as they embark on their career journeys in the tumultuous job market of the UK.

According to a recent study conducted by Youth Group, a staggering three-fifths (63%) of 18-25-year-olds are unaware of the current career advice resources available to them. Additionally, nearly half (48%) of young people feel constrained in their ability to access crucial career guidance.

These findings coincide with the highly anticipated launch of Season 3 of “My Duvet Flip: The Careers Show for Young People,” which features Jack Parsons, the esteemed Chief Youth Officer of the UK. The new season of the show is proudly supported by Aviva & EY, returning partners from Season 2, along with the addition of leading UK jobs platform Totaljobs.

The latest season of “My Duvet Flip” will be available for viewing on LinkedIn, Youth Space, TikTok, and YouTube starting from July 1, 2023. The release of these figures from Youth Group emphasises the evident gap between the available guidance and the requirements of young job seekers. A majority of young individuals (aged 16-24) remain unaware of the wealth of career advice resources at their disposal. Furthermore, 48% of respondents experienced limitations when attempting to access these invaluable resources.

Recognising the urgent need to address this gap in careers guidance, the eagerly anticipated third season of “My Duvet Flip: The Careers Show for Young People” returns this July.

In addition to Aviva and EY, Season 3 introduces a brand new partnership with Totaljobs, a prominent UK recruitment solutions provider and part of the esteemed global digital recruitment platform, The StepStone Group.

Totaljobs is acutely aware of the significant challenges faced by young people in the UK. Their own report on the nation’s future talent, released in October 2022, revealed that half (48%) of 16-18-year-olds in the UK believed they were not receiving sufficient career advice in school.

Leveraging their extensive 20-year experience in helping individuals find the ideal job to suit their life circumstances, Totaljobs aims to empower and inspire the youth of the UK through their partnership with “My Duvet Flip.” Season 3, hosted by the UK’s Chief Youth Officer, Jack Parsons, will continue to engage in upfront and candid conversations with esteemed global business leaders, entrepreneurs, and politicians. The show delves into their career journeys, extracting valuable tips and advice for viewers based on their personal experiences. Additionally, the series offers insights into what motivates these leaders to achieve success and how they start their day with a positive mindset.

The second season of “My Duvet Flip” garnered an impressive audience, attracting 9 million views and generating over eight times more engagements compared to the previous season. Notable guests in Season 2 included UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Debbie Hewitt (FA Chairman), Sebastian Dettmers (Chief Executive Officer of The StepStone Group), and Matt Brittin (President of Google Europe).

Jack Parsons, CEO of Youth Group and the UK’s Chief Youth Officer, expressed his excitement about the upcoming third season, stating, “I’m thrilled to present the third season of ‘My Duvet Flip’ and share the motivational and honest conversations I’ve had the privilege

to experience with some of Britain’s most successful business leaders, including Sebastian from The StepStone Group. The podcast is all about supporting the millions of young people across the UK and empowering them to achieve their goals.”

Earlier this year, I was a guest on ‘My Duvet Flip’ and had the pleasure of meeting Jack in person. I was truly inspired by his mission: to be an inspiration and support for young people in the world of work. This aligns perfectly with what we do at The StepStone Group and Totaljobs, where we strive to help everyone find the right job.”

Phoebe Barter, Group Brand Director of Aviva, expressed her pride in partnering with “My Duvet Flip” for another season, highlighting the show’s discussions on important issues such as mental health, student pressures, career uncertainty, and the cost of living. She emphasised Aviva’s commitment to helping people solve their financial challenges. Barter also acknowledged Youth Group’s research, revealing that three in five young people are unaware of the career advice available to them.
