DVLA’s 2024 Banned ‘24’ Series Number Plates Exposed

The DVLA has announced the full roster of number plates banned for 2024, including controversial entries like *W24 NKR, SL24 GSS, and SH24 GED, due to their offensive potential.

The arrival of new vehicle registrations in March and September introduces ‘24’ for registrations following March 1, and ‘74’ for those after September 1. The generation of millions of plates per issuance means some might spell or suggest words or phrases that are rude or inappropriate.

To mitigate this, the DVLA conducts a detailed review of all new number plates, excluding any that might be offensive.

Tony Clark, a number plate expert and the Marketing Manager at Plates4Less, submitted a Freedom of Information request to unearth the plates deemed ‘Too Rude for the Road’ by the DVLA for the ‘24’ series commencing on March 1.

The inquiry revealed a plethora of combinations considered unsuitable, such as BO24 LOK, FA24 NNY, AS24 HLE, SH24 GGY, SK24 NKZ, and PE24 VRT.

Tony observed, “Rude or humorous private plates have always been popular, and can be a lot of fun. People choose private plates like these to customise their vehicles without personalising them. Some want to shock and others want to amuse their fellow road users”.

He further noted, “Sometimes, the DVLA restrictions just lead to people being more creative, and trying to find rude plates that the DVLA didn’t think to ban.”

Plates4Less has noted a significant inclination towards searches for rude or offensive words, with an average of 345 such searches happening daily. The ‘C word’, in particular, is the 29th most common search, with around 21 daily searches, and ‘F*ck’ is searched 12.42 times per day.

“Outside of rude registrations, some of the most popular searches we get are names, like Sam, Dan, and Amy.”
