Evolve Debuts Project BMX: An Electrifying Synthesis of Nostalgic BMX Culture and Modern Electric Technology
Evolve, a leader in personal electric mobility, is excited to announce Project BMX. This innovative endeavour blends the revered BMX bike design, reminiscent of the 80s cult classic film, with contemporary electric propulsion. The electric BMX, featuring a compact 24-inch design and the classic Skyway Tuff wheels, encapsulates a fusion of youthful nostalgia and modern electrical advancements. After 14 years of pioneering electric skateboards, Evolve is now venturing into the realm of electric bicycles.
“We’ve been making awesome electric skateboards for a long time as we’ve got a good 14 years under our belt now. And I’ve always been thinking, if ever we were going to do something different, what would the product be? We’ve done a couple of other secret projects on the side. We feel like a really cool retro-looking BMX suits Evolve’s ethos,” said Jeff Anning, founder of Evolve.
Evolve has skilfully retained the quintessential BMX spirit, integrating the battery within the saddle and embedding a robust Bafang M560 Mid Drive Motor into the frame. Jared Gilsenan, Industrial Designer at Evolve, stressed their dedication to maintaining the BMX’s traditional characteristics: “It has all the adjustability and movement and feel of the traditional bikes. So despite the fact we put a battery in there, we haven’t compromised on the saddle itself.” This approach achieves a refined, old-school BMX appearance that captivates attention while keeping the bike’s agility and fluidity intact.

The innovative 36V battery system in Project BMX, co-created with VELO, is ingeniously concealed within the saddle. This design allows for simple battery replacement and enhanced range without altering the classic BMX frame design.
“In the last 18 months, we had a new saddle design prototype coming out every month. We spent a lot of time playing with that shape in those contours, making sure that it wasn’t grabbing in any area, but you could still fit a battery underneath,” explained Jared Gilsenan.

Project BMX opts for a mid drive Bafang M560 motor, strategically positioned to optimize the bike’s weight distribution, delivering smoother pedal-assist performance. This choice negates the issues associated with adding weight to the rear wheel, resulting in a quieter, more efficient bike with an extended range.

The Project BMX incorporates Skyway Tuff Wheels, a significant element of the BMX legacy, reawakening fond memories. The custom-designed hub mount accommodates a disk rotor on Skyway Tuffs, offering a blend of classic aesthetics and modern disc brake functionality.
